An ASUS ROG GL552VW-DH71 Review Won't Answer These 61 Questions

ARE THE PROCESSOR, GRAPHICS CARD, OR RAM REMOVABLE/UPGRADABLE?

• The memory is removable and upgradeable (you can go up to 32GB RAM on this machine if you remove the original 8GB chips and install two 16GB chips). ASUS allows this, and it has no effect on your warranty (except the fact that the warranty covering the new memory chips will have to be provided by the maker of these chips, not ASUS.) The processor and graphics card are, in general, not upgradeable in ASUS notebooks, this will void your warranty. So, technically you can do that, but at your own risk and the acknowledgement that the warranty will be no longer valid. Basically, if something happens to the computer and you need to send it to ASUS for repairs, you would have to remove the upgraded CPU and graphics card (graphics card, by the way, might be soldered to the motherboard, i.e. the upgrade is not an easy procedure for most end users) and put back the original ones before sending the item to ASUS. Otherwise, if they find out you upgraded CPU and/or graphics card, they will void your warranty. The CPU and the graphics card in this computer are already very powerful. Unless you are using a rare software that requires something more powerful, I wouldn't touch these components if I were you.

HELLO, CAN I INSTALL AUTOCAD AND ENGINEERING PROGRAMS, OR WILL I HAVE ANY PROBLEMS? WHAT COMES IN THE BOX BESIDES THE LAPTOP?

• You can install almost anything in this machine :-) and it will perform superbly. I would strongly recommend adding an ssd disk -the machine has a slot for a slim one, I think this is the model Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB M.2 3.5-Inch SSD (MZ-N5E500BW) but please confirm. I bougth a common ssd (same shape as a laptop hard drive) and had to take out the dvd drive to install it. Anyway, this computer has the power to run any of those programs you mentioned. Be sure to configure the video to run with the nvidia board for those programs to get best results.

• Yes you can add an SSD. That's exactly what I did, it's a better deal than buying it built that way. Get the M.2 form factor drive. One caveat: once you open the drive bay there is no screw for securing the drive. I had to rob one out of another laptop I had sitting around. I couldn't even find the specs for buying one, but it's tiny. It's beautiful though, I have 500gb SSD AND 1tb spinner.

• The computer has an empty M.2 slot. You can install an M.2 SSD in it, which will coexist with the preinstalled HDD. You can also move Windows and programs to the SSD for a faster boot and operations.

• Most likely youll have to swap it out, the question is how many SATO slots it has. Best bet is to call ROG or ASUS and ask them.


DOES THE ASUS ROG GL552VW-DH71 HAD A PLASTIC OR ALUMINUM LID?

• It's a metalic plate on top of the plastic frame. The entire computer is made of the plastic frame with the metalic plate. A very cool looking design, if you ask me. I also saw one report that the screen frame was wobbly. I'm not sure what that was about. I have one sitting in front of me right now, the screen frame as sturdy as any other major brand notebook (Lenovo, HP, Fujitsu, etc.) Nothing bends easily. I mean, sure, you can bend it, if you apply a significant force, but the same thing happens with any other laptop. The exception, perhaps, is a military grade notebook (Panasonic Toughbook, Getac, stuff like that - those are made of of different plastics and metal, but they were designed to survive in combat, not on a desk or a lap of a regular user.)

• For this specific model unit it has a durable plastic and metallic plate.

• Yes, in addition to the regular USB ports, this model also comes with one USB 3.1 TYPE C port. Unfortunately, Amazon doesn't list many specification for most of the computers. It has to do with the technical limitations and listing restrictions of Amazon's product pages. Hopefully, they will change it someday, but for now, merchants are very limited and restricted in terms of what they can show on the product pages at Amazon. You can always get the model number of the product you are interested in and check its specs with the manufacturer's website. As long as the model number is the same (also known as a part number in computer world), the specs will be the same, no matter where you buy it.

• No, it will not affect the warranty. However, since ASUS does not support a third party installed software (same with any other notebook brand), they will not be able to provide tech support while you have Linux on it. You would have to put Windows back on it first. Usually, Linux and other OS users remove the original drive when they get the computer, install a new drive and load the OS that they need on the new hard drive. That way, if a technical issue comes around and the warranty repairs need to be done, they can easily put back the original drive with the original OS that came on the computer.

• It's hard to say, it depends on many factors: wifi router model and radio power settings, building structure and materials, number of walls the signal has to go through, unless it's a clear sight. I can normally get a good signal within 100 feet outside my house (and there are still quite a few walls it has to go through before it reaches my router. While in the house, I also pick up neighbors' signals from their routers. I don't know which one belongs to who, but judging by the number of options, some house can be as far as 200-300 feet from us. It's a good range, much better than what I'm getting on my other laptops (Lenovo, Fujitsu) that are over a year old at this point.

• Currently running fallout 4 at high settings and it's running fine. A little hot, but I imagine a laptop cooling pad would help. I haven't attempted the witcher 3 or A.C. Syndicat, but based on it's performance so far I would say medium settings for those games would pull around 40 fps, as both have a much higher ram load.

• I think it shall be fine with medium to low graphic setting for fallout 4 and Assassin's creed syndicate. Witcher 3 may be the low graphic setting.
