• I have used this shredder extensively for over a year, and the only normal smells are the off-gassing of the plastic, and the electrical heat smell that a motor makes (similar to the smell your vacuum cleaner or blender makes when in use). If you smell something burning, melting, or if there are "fumes" coming out of your unit, you should probably discontinue using it and get it serviced. If you are mechanically inclined, you can flip the unit over and see if anything is stuck in the blades and try to fish it out. I shouldn't have to say to not do this while the unit is plugged in. About twice a year I flip mine over and use tweezers to pull out anything that gets up in there - usually a bunch of the plastic material from windowed envelopes. If I am feeling ambitious, I rip a good part of the plastic off the envelopes before shredding, but not always.
• I have used mine a lot with some heavy use as I am cleaning out files in a large home office and never smelled anything, definitely no burning smell! One or two reviewers mentioned it would get hot and turn itself off with a lot of use. Mine hasn't done this to me either. I need to empty the bin before it has ever gotten hot enough to turn off and I can shred pretty fast now!
• No its not. If it continues, you should return it.If its new you may have some oil burning off but that should only last few times until its clean. I have never smelled burning rubber. I have found that mine will start out of the blue and I have to manually turn it off to get it to stop. hope that helps.
• Yeah it is. I even saw some fumes come out when I shredded my old visiting cards. But the machine works good after that. Just make sure to not feed in thick bunch of papers.
• I only used it for approximately ten minutes thus far, and I didn't smell anything at all. Maybe it was what you were shredding?
• Def. not! I only use it occasionally but have never smelled anything like that, sounds like you got a defective unit.
• I have had mine for 2+ months and use it extensively and never smelled any "burnt rubber smell".
WHAT KIND OF MAINTENANCE DOES THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER NEED?
• I do not use the shredder very often and I am careful not to let it run continually for more than 2 mins. to prevent overheating. I had my last shredder for about 10 years without doing any maintenance. So far, this one has also not needed anything. The manual states "DO NOT use flammable synthetic oil, petroleum-based or aerosol products of any kind". I had bought some Fellowes Prformance Oil since it seems to be recommended for use with micro shredders. But I haven't used anything so far.
• So far I haven't had to do any maintenance. On my old shredder, I used a lubrication sheet about once a month which seemed to keep things running. You can get those at your local office supply store or from Amazon. As another reviewer said, putting a plastic grocery bag inside the bin makes it much easier to dump without the little pieces escaping.
• The instruction manual does not include the " maintenance" word. As others have pointed out, it does mention not letting the basket to get too full. The manual basically says, "Don't abuse it." If you have specific question; the customer service number is: 1-866-216-1072.
• To be honest with you I have not done any maintenance on this shredder yet but have considered buying the lubricating sheets at some point. I've had it for a few months and it hasn't needed any service yet except being sure to keep it emptied.
• After waste tub fills, take two 8.5 x 11 sheets, drizzled on with vegetable oil [unlike petrochem products, no chance of fire with it], and run through. Seems to add a couple years to useful life of a micro-shredder
• Since I have only had it a few weeks, none. I usually empty it when it is about 2/3 full (which takes a lot to fill up). I purchased the oil as well & have used a small amount thus far. K
• Hi D, Sorry, I'm not much help there. I haven't used the shredder often enough for that to be an issue.
• I have not had the need to lubricate it yet, nor have I found the need to do any other type of maintenance to it.
• No maintenance has been required since shredder was purchased. Runs great, does everything we want.
• The only maintenance mine has required is emptying.
JUST GOT THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER, SHREDDED ABOUT 50 SHEETS AND THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER STARTED HAVING A BURNT SMELL. MACHINE WASN'T HOT. WILL THE SMELL GO AWAY? OR I NEED REPLACEMENT?
• That never happened in my experience with this machine. When I began using the shredder, I first put through a lubricated sheet which I purchased through Amazon. I did this again after each time I filled the bin to make sure the blades were lubricated. After I used up the lubricated sheets, I simply put through a sheet with three horizontal stripes of 3-in-one oil down the page (much cheaper). Perhaps the burnt smell came from not lubricating the cutting edges.
• I have not had any burning smells from my 8 sheet shredder. Make sure you give it a break and do not constant feed without stopping and letting the motor stop. Once it has stopped, you can feed the paper several more times and then let it stop again. If I run my shredder full blast (but let the motor stop off and on) until the basket is full, usually the shredder will be hot and stop working until it cools off, but it still doesn't smell like anything is burning.
• Ok I noticed the same thing for a few sheets but not as much as yours my suggestion Get 5 copy paper sheets and a paper towel along with some vegetable oil. Rub the oil on the paper towel then apply it to the front and back of each copy sheet. One at a time shred each piece of paper. This will lubricate the shredder and possibly stop the smell. Every other time you empty the basket I would do this to keep the blades well oiled.
• Spence, Ok I noticed the same thing for a few sheets but not as much as yours my suggestion Get 5 copy paper sheets and a paper towel along with some vegetable oil. Rub the oil on each paper towel from and back. One at a time shred each piece of paper. This will lubricate the shredder and possibly stop the smell. Every other time you empty the basket I would do this to keep the blades well oiled.
• I have not experienced this problem, but if I had I would return it for refund or replacement or refund.
• I FIND THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER BEST TO ONLY SHRED 2 PAGES AT A TIME
WHAT'S THE PUBLISHED CONTINUOUS RUN TIME?
• For paper shredding, 2 minutes continuous shredding but I have run for a longer time without a problem. The shredder head will get warm and has a thermal cutoff where the shredder will not operate until the temperature drops. Recommended time to wait is 40 minutes in the shredder documentation. I will buy shredder sheets that are lubricant impregnated and oil the cutters that way. Also, if you are concerned about personal information being properly disposed of, this shredder turns sheets into confetti so information is hard to gather together.
• RJohnson: I do not recommend running a shredder for more than a minute as they will trip out on high temperature. Shredders work best when operated in batches with rest in between large runs. Don't forget to lubricate the cutter blades towards the end of a long run so they will last longer. We are now on our third shredder as they have not lasted very long. Hope this helps.
• Reviewer Patrick Collier is accurate in regards to the 2 minute recommendation. I had this run for 30 minutes when it arrived on the first day. I had a lot of paper to shred! The head was pretty warm, but the shredder did not shut down. I'm not worried about shredding this past 2 minutes one bit.
• Amazon makes and sells this item: Amazon should publish such info. They say, in owner's manual, " Continuous shredding of paper should not exceed 2 minutes." They should also tell us about how and when to oil the cutters. I've asked -- they forgot to answer.
• I have not read about continuous run time. The motor shuts off when you stop feeding it and starts again when you insert paper. I don't have enough shredding to worry about continuous run time. Sorry I can't be more helpful.
• According to the instruction manual, continuous shredding should not exceed 2 minutes with a maximum of 8-sheets.
• I don't understand the question.
• 2 minutes continuous run time
GOOD FOR NORMAL HOME USE?
• I've had it for over a month now. Shredded cd's, credit cards and paper.Like I said, it can do 8-10 sheets but struggling slowly. It excels at 3-5 sheets.Paper feeding can be a little tricky but I didn't have any problems. I think its good for the home, shredding bills and the such. Def not for business, its pretty small.
• Yes I think it is good for home use, I would even us it in the office. I have used it for a while, and I'm very happy with it. It is the best I have come across in a long time. I would buy another one, if I needed to buy another one. I would commend it to anyone. Micro...Cut paper/CD/Credit Card Shredder, is a great shredder.
• So far so good. I shred about 30 pieces of mail a week and have had no trouble. Usually I open items, but my spouse just puts the envelope through on occasion. Goes slower but no sticking or hanging. Shreds those fake credit cards and expired ones just fine, too.
• Yes, this shredder is great for home use. It is easy to empty and fairly quiet for a shredder. I use it every day with no problems...most junk mail is not even opened; I just put it right through!
• Yes, it would do well for normal home use. As long as you realize, you won't get 8 sheets shredded at a time.
• Yes, this shredder is about the best that I have ever used for normal home use. I would recommend it.
• Yes but I would not do more than 5 sheets at a time unit struggles when you do more.
• Yes i use it for home use. I would highly recommend it . Happy shredding
• Yes one of the best i have ever used. Would highly recommend it
• Absolutely. I used it for my family of 5 with no problems.
HAS ANYONE ELSE HAD THIS PROBLEM: THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER WILL NOT AUTOMATICALLY SHUT OFF ONCE THE PAPERS ARE SHREDDED?
• No. Sometimes it takes a little longer to finish shredding, when the bucket gets close to full, making it appear that the unit is not turning off automatically. It may be because the paper being shredded hasn't gone through the the shredder entirely. The shredder may need some maintenance, which should be done periodically with a slight bit of 3-in-one oil or similar product. Check he instructions or look at Q & A for this item on the Amazon site.
• I had a paper get stuck in the blade one time and it kept running. I put it on reverse and let it dump out the paper and turned it back to forward and didn't have any other problems. Try to look and see if a staple has gotten hung in the middle where the paper sensor is , or possible a sticker came off some paper you were shredding and covered the sensor.
• So far I have had no problems with the shredder. The first thing I would think of if it does not shut off is that something is getting stuck in the sensor. Now I think the sensor is right above the opening where the paper goes in. Perhaps it is dirty/dusty? I love the shredder and am so glad I got it. The best one I have ever had. ;D
• I have experienced this situation many times. Every time it was a small piece of paper stuck in the side of the receiving slot. I unplugged the unit from power, used a powerful flashlight to find the offending chad, and carefully removed same with a scribe (or other pointy object).
• After the papers are shredded my shredder runs a few seconds more then it shuts off automatically.
• NO, I haven't had any trouble with it.
• I have not had any problems with mine.
• No
FIRST TIME USE--25 PAGES PUTTING ONE TO TWO SHEETS IN AT A TIME--AND I SMELLED AND SAW EITHER PAPER DUST OR SMOKE. HELP?
• Answering only from my experience so far, I've put from two to eight sheets, for a total of approximately 300 pages so far. There does seem to be a smallish amount of dust from time to time. Neither hubby nor I have seen/smelled smoke (and I have an extremely sensitive nose). I just stopped running the machine when I noticed the dust and let the machine cool down, clean it out, and start back later. I don't know this for a fact since I haven't had to oil yet, but from other machines maybe there's too much oil or not enough on your particular unit...just a thought there.
• It has not happened to me. However, after shredding 2-3 sheets at one time, I can feel the motor is getting warmer so I stop shredding. If I continue to shred, 2-3 at a time, the shredded will stop and I need to play with the switch (pushing forward, reverse, forward) and it will go and stop again needing to play with the switch until all the paper is shredded. That is why I would not recommend this shredded to anyone.
• I've been using mine for about a month now and no smoke or smoke smell. There is a moderate amount of paper dust inside the bin once I open it up to throw the shred away. But nothing coming from the motor area. I also use 1-4 sheets at a time as anything larger than that amount seems to bog down the motor too much.
• I have shredded a good bit at a time, not more than 8 at a time, and have not experienced that problem. If it smells like smoke, I would return it.
• I have the same shredder and never had anything like that happen. I would see about an exchange. That doesn't seem right
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER OVEN HEATS, DOES THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER LET YOU KNOW, OR DOES THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER JUST CUT OFF? ...THANK YOU
• Had to wait for an occurrence to let you know: yesterday it jammed with only 2 receipts each stapled with a duplicate check (so 4 sheets of paper with 2 staples) and it caught/quit. However, I had been running it for over the recommended minutes with brief pauses, for about 10 minutes. It didn't feel warm to the touch. I left it alone for about 15 minutes, then ran the switch backwards and forwards, and it started up again. That's the first incident I've had. Generally, I stay on the safe side and don't run more than 6 sheets of paper for 5 minutes only. Hope that helps.
• I have not had a problem with overheating but then I do not use it in an office environment only at home for shredding old bills, receipts, occasional credit cards and CDs. The book suggests not to exceed a run time of 2 minutes and while I have gone over 2 minutes, I do not load the feeder to the max capacity but only 1 - 4 pages at a time so the unit is not being pressed to the maximum during that 2 minutes. If I have a lot to shred, I stagger the amount of paper.
• The booklet says continuous shredding should not exceed 2 minutes. It is equipped with an automatic motor overload protection circuit that will terminate power. Suggested run time is 2 minutes on / 40 minutes off. I really like the shredder, but it's not meant for heavy-duty use.
• I have not had an overheat condition that would shut it off. I have felt the top warm, but never considered it to be an issue.
• I have not had this problem ,but I am sure that like any good electric device it will some form of over load protection. don
I'M CONSIDERING THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER FOR SOMEONE WITH VERY POOR EYESIGHT. IS FEEDING PAPER INTO THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER GOING TO BE A PROBLEM?
• The slot on top for the paper is fed into the feeder at an angle from the front of the machine and not straight down from the top like a lot of shredders. I think it's a safety feature. But the person you are talking about should be able to feel for the opening easily enough to feed the paper in. I guess you or someone else could practice with that person so they get the hang of it. Also, the pull out basket underneath (which I love!) must be fully closed for the machine to operate. Hope this helps!
• I would say yes. You'd be better off looking for a top feeder version. On the other hand, since this is a side feeder, likely designed with safety in mind, it actually might be a good choice for someone with poor eyesight. Best bet is to give it a shot & return within 30 days if it's not working out.
• The way the paper feeds into this machine is easy from any angle. I insert my papers any way they will fit, & it has never jammed or had to be reversed. I think someone with a visual impairment could very easily use this paper shredder without assistance.
• No! I purchased this item recently and it is excellent! There is a wide opening for feeding paper which will be great for anyone that has limited eyesight. I would highly recommend it and be assured that it will do the job!!
• This is hard to answer. I would like information as to whether the recipient is a close relative , their age, and just how bad their eyesight is.
• No more difficult than any other shredder.
IS THERE A CREDIT CARD FEEDER? THE PRODUCT PICTURE DOESN'T SHOW ONE BUT AT LEAST ONE CUSTOMER FEEDBACK VIDEO DOES.
• Yes, BUT. The shredder itself will shred paper and the credit cards. There is a CD/DVD slot to the right of the shredder. The manual states to shred credit cards in the slot where you would shred paper. We tried to shred credit cards but they came out in strips instead of small pieces. We had to retrieve the card pieces and shred again. The shredder sounds like it is bogging down if you put several sheets of paper in but it does the job. School is still out as to why the credit cards come out in big pieces????
• When looking at the top of the shredder, you can see that there is an area designated in the center of the main feeding area that shows to be for credit cards; there is also an area for CD/DVDs. I've used the CD/DVD slot to shred credit cards with no issues. Hope this helps.
• Yes...and no...! It has an area indicated on the regular paper feed section that shows where to put credit cards so it will definitely shred them. It is not a specific credit card feeder. It does, however, have a specific place for CDs.
• There is a separate slot for feeding CD,DVD, credit cards. it is located on the top right, rear of the paper feed slot.
• Yes, it has a credit card feeder. I've used this feature several times and it works great.
• Yes but it not a good machine I rather get one from Costco 12!sheet for same price
• Yes there is
• Yes
CAN YOU PUT CREDIT CARD OFFERS, THAT USUALLY INCLUDE SOME BALANCE TRANSFERS CHECKS (OR THINGS THAT SIZE)?
• You want to shred those things for security purposes. I always do. But I would not 'push the envelope' (pun intended) on those things with this shredder. Take the trouble - and time - to open and unfold them first. I wouldn't take the chance on having the shredder freeze up on you with the unopened envelope. And then just recycle the envelope, and other stuffers without any identifying info on them. Give your shredder a chance at a longer life by not shredding everything.
• Yes, I feed the paper in small amounts so that I don't get paper jam like I did on my last shredder. It is an appliance with a motor, so like with anything else, take care of it and it will last longer. Try shredder oil on a piece of paper now and then.
• Credit cards, yes. Up to 8 pages, yes. Books of checks, no. It's a good unit, though, and I am pleased with it. For the money, I couldn't find anything comparable. Hope this helps!
• Yes, it shreds small things well too. I have put store receipts through and they were shredded just like everything else.
• Yes, It will shred up to eight sheets of 20-lbs bond paper and will accept paper widths up to 8 3/4"
• Yes, its not a terrible shredder if you only need it for junk mail and whatnot.
• Any sheet of paper as wide as a letter size sheet of paper will fit.
• It takes normal sized copy paper sheets..so 8 1/2 wide.
• This is the very best Shredder that I have ever owned.
IS THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER JAM FREE?
• I think there is no such thing as jamb free...this is the fourth or fifth one i have owned over a lot of years and they all can get jammed if you over load them.what helps is the reverse feature for that problem.. also if it says its good for ten sheets dont put more than 6 in there...whatever the claim don't they all exaggerate the sheet claim
• Absolutely. Of course if your jamming a wad a paper through it I'm sure it will jam. I've had several different shredders before but this one by far is the best I've ever owned. I particularly like the size of the material after it's shred. It's confetti. Great little machine. I would highly recommend it.
• I don't believe that it advertises itself as jam free, and not many make that claim. But I can tell you that I've personally never had a problem with it jamming. Of course, I don't test its limits by overloading it or running it longer that the recommended time. I've been super happy with mine!
• I don't know if it's "Jam free" but had about 2 months and have not had any jams or any other problems for thst matter.
• I've had a few months now and it has never jammed. I usually only put in 4 pieces at a time.
• I have never had a jam but I suppose if you put too many sheets of paper in it it may jjam
• I've had it for almost three months and it's never jammed.
• I have never had a problem with it
WILL THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER SHRED THIN CARDBOARD? EXAMPLE: CEREAL BOX
• You know what, Jacob? I think it probably would. I wouldn't try to go much thicker or heavier than that, but a single sheet of cereal box wouldn't probably be a problem. Lemme see here... I have the back sheet from a pad of paper... Yeah, that went through okay. It didn't sound real good, but it went through okay eventually. It's something I'd want to often, but it appears to handle that, yeah.
• I have used it to shred thin cardboard but it is not ideal. You can tell that the motor is working harder than with regular paper - even 8 sheets. Normal usage limit is 2 minutes of continuous shredding. If you were going to shred thin cardboard, I wouldn't do more than 30 seconds at a time or so, just my opinion.
• I Would not recommend trying to shred something like that. I have seen more expensive type shredders struggle with cardboard. It may be okay if you shred in small strips. But it will eat up credit cards, CD's, and DVD's with no problem. Hope this helps
• I haven't tried it, but I imagine it handling an occasional piece of cardboard since it's able to handle a CD or credit card. I would only shred a cereal box if I'd opened it up to a single layer.
• I think not. It seems to struggle with 4-5 sheets of paper. It works OK for my needs but I don't think I would put cardboard, even thinner cardboard.
• The thickest items we shredded was credit cards, which it cut through well.
• Sure can, guick and easy.
CAN YOU LINE THE RECEPTICAL WITH A PLASTIC TRASH BAG FOR EASIER EMPTYING?
• Yes you can, but I've never felt the need to do so. Even with the tiny particles, I don't get much "spillage" when I empty the bin. What I do get is easily and quickly (like 5-10 seconds) picked up. The problem I have with a liner, at least the plastic ones, is that they tend to attract or repel the shredded paper via static electricity, and actually cause the problem you're trying to avoid.
• Yes. 4 gallon bag should do it. Pull out basket, fit bag over the basket and replace in unit. Note: Make sure to check the basket so that you don't get excess overflow when removing bag. If basket is full shredder will stop, and you may have a slight overflow, creating slight inconvenience.
• Yes you can place a trash bag over the bin. I have used a plastic grocery bag before, but it makes it harder because you can not see how full the bin is since you are blocking the window.
• I think so. The basket just slides out but I never tried it. I take the basket and just dump it into a big trash can so I never tried putting a bag in it
• Yes. It's a small shredder, so I use a plastic grocery bag to line the receptacle. It works well.
• I guess you could but it's really not difficult to empty and not that messy.
• I would not know we don't put bags in the hopper.
• Yes. I use one of the plastic grocery bags.
WHO MAKES THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER? PLEASE DON'T SAY AMAZON :) AMAZON OUTSOURCED THIS TO SOMEONE.
• This is not the answer you're looking for. I unplugged mine and turned it upside down and couldn't find anything other than "Amazon Basics" and "Made in China". I went through the small manual and the Protection Plan Agreement but found nothing. I even called the Customer Service number thinking I might get the actual manufacturer but it just went to Amazon's Customer Service. I can say that I've had mine since July 2014, used it at least weekly and it has never given me a moment of concern. It works perfectly and I'm quite pleased with it. KLM
• No idea who makes this shredder. It is made in China. So far it works very well. Gobbles up 6 - 8 sheets of copy paper with ease. slices credit cards and other plastic cards into long thin strips (not microcuts). It is perfect for small home office and daily shredding of junk mail. Keep it lubricated monthly silicon spray on a paper sheet) and it performs well.
• Sorry, but I do not know. I checked the shredder and the manual and it does not say. I do know that it was made in China and the customer service number is 1-866-216-1072 according to the manual. You might call the number and ask. Good luck on your quest.
• AmazonBasics is Amazon's private-label brand, In other words the item is outsource to a Chinese Company to make Amazon own brand of shedders. This what a lot of companies do to cut cost and labor.
HOW IS THE NOISE LEVEL COMPARED WITH OTHER SHREDDERS. ALSO HOW DOES THE SPEED OF SHREDDING COMPARE?
• Please understand I had a 4 year old model before this new Amazon Basic. The noise level is quiet. I don't wake my sister in the next room and I can talk and people hear me. The speed is the fastest I have seen with one sheet. More than that and it does slow down some. You will be amazed at how small the clippings are. If something should happen to this one, I would replace it with another AmazonBasic.
• Like all shredders, this one is fairly noisy when it's grinding. I would say the noise level is average. The shredding speed is average as well. The thicker the item or the more sheets you feed at once slow it down by a small amount. I'd say it averages about 2 seconds per feed.
• Low average noise level - certainly not a whisper but it is not at all startling or obnoxious. The speed is swift for a personal use unit in my opinion - not slow/sluggish but definitely not industrial speed.
• Much quieter than our last shredder. Because of the micro-cutting it is slow, but it does do multiple sheets, staples, and credit cards no problem.
• I think it is fairly quiet, and the speed is adequate for a shredder in this price range.
• The noise level is not a problem. The shredding is similar to other shredders.
• It's has the typical shredder sound but the speed is good. I Llike it.
HOW NOISY IS THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER WHEN THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER IS SHREDDING? I WANT ONE THAT IS ON THE QUIETER SIDE RATHER THAN LOUD AND OBNOXIOUS...
• There is always of necessity a certain amount of noise involved with shredding, but I thought it much quieter than any I've ever used--but in the past I've always bought on the cheaper side and they were quite noisy, so by comparison this one is a dream. For instance, if someone else is watching TV or on the phone, I don't have to wait till they are done to run the shredder like I have in the past. I think you'll be happy with it.
• I second CAT's response. I was actually constructing a response that was pretty much identical to CAT's. :) But to add to her response, for this price point and for a "Basics" shredder, it's relatively quiet. But if you're expecting the noise level to be on par with higher-end shredders specifically designed to mute the volume, you may need to reconsider.
• I did notice when I first started using this shredder that it seemed quieter than the one I had before. I had an Aurora. How that compares to other shredders I cannot answer.
• I do not know what you consider loud but I think it is reasonable considering it is grinding paper into confetti. It is not nearly as loud as a blender.
• It is quieter than most, but still makes a fair amount of noise. It does do a good job for the money
• I'm very satisfied; I call it quiet.
HOW EASY THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER TO EMPTY WITHOUT MAKING A HUGE MESS? AND IS BASKET EASY TO PULL OUT AND IS THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER LIGHTWEIGHT?
• Yes it's pretty easy to empty out and it's plastic, so not very heavy. You can try to use thin trash bag liner to keep it cleaner, i didn't and so there was a lot of paper dust and particles stuck all over the place. I'm sure it's easy enough to rinse off if it bothered me enough, but it's been fine as is. Hope this helps. =)
• Emptying must be done carefully or you end up with little bits of paper everywhere but where you want them. Basket is easy to pull out and is light weight BUT it must be reinstalled properly to activate the shredders.
• It's really simple, fast to pull out basket to empty !! As for the mess well that's would be up to you if you let the basket over fill then you will need to bring out the broom!!
• It was very easy to empty. basket is easy to pull out and light weight. holds alot of shreddings. credit cards chopped up just as fine as paper. glad i bought this.
• It is easy to empty without making a mess and the baskety is easy and lightweight to handle. I am very happy with this unit.
• I am almost totally handicapped and I can do it with one hand if it isn't full. I empty when half full. Hope this helps
IS THERE A BASIC WARRANTY?
• Paul, There is no stated warranty in the booklet that came with this product. But since it is an Amazon product, if you don't find the product to be reliable, just contact Amazon Customer Service and return for credit or refund. I have used this shredder rather heavily since I bought it. I will be moving into a new apartment and I am shredding papers that I do not want to keep before the movers get here. The cutter head is quite sturdy. Even though the cutters will handle staples and paper clips, I remove staples and clips before I shred to keep the cutter blades in good shape. To keep the cutting mechanism lubricated I will shred a cutter lubricating sheet periodically to cut down on wear on the cutter head. The instructions don't say anything about required maintenance, but I am doing this maintenance because it makes sense to me. I would encourage you to buy and try it for yourself.
• Not sure. don't remember a registry area. works great so far. tested it with cd's paper and credit cards.
• Amazon basic products carry a one year warranty unless stated otherwise.
• It says 1 year on the web page, I bought extra 3 year coverage
• Not that I could find in the paperwork that was sent.
• Yes for less than $10 I purchased a 2 year warrenty
• No warranty listed in the Instruction Manual.
• I purchased a warranty
CAN YOU PUT A GARBAGE BAG IN THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER FOR THE SHREDDINGS?
• No, it's not set up for that. I'm sure it's possible to do, but you'd need to cut the bag since the bucket engages with a little switch that tells the shredder it's in place. A bag would probably get in the way a bit. So no it's not meant for it, but yes I'm sure it could be done.
• I have not tried tp put a garbage bag into it, but I don't know why not. Actually what I do does not require a separate bag, i.e. I take the top off the shredder, and dump the shredding bin into my kitchen trash. Hope that helps.
• Sure you can, but I don't know of a bag that would fit it well. The bags that I know are bigger than this bucket. Besides, I can't imagine how sloppy it would look with a bag protruding out of the sides. It's O.K the way it is.
• You MIGHT be able to do so, but the unit is not designed with that purpose in mind and I fear the garbage bag might get caught up in the shredding drums.
• A standard garbage bag would be too big. The basket is only 10" high by 5" wide x 11" wide approx.
• I would not. The basket is lightweight and easy to empty.
• I tried it once but it interfered with workings.
WHAT TYPE/AMOUNT OF ASSEMBLY IS REQUIRED?
• If I remember correctly all I needed to do was pop the casters io on the bottom. Be gentle the plastic is light. The first ones cracked and I sent it back. I tried to put the casters on it was a breeze & no damage. Outside of that there are basically two pieces the shredder on to and the a basket. I wouldn't worry about the assembly its really simple. Since I received the replacement I haven't had any problems. The only thing is if I had to do all over again I would have bought the higher capacity heavier duty unit. I didn't think I had enough paper to justify the extra cost and I was mistaken.
• It is very simple to put together. It took me less than 5 minutes with no tools required. The rollers pop in to place. The rest is just putting the basket in to the shredder and placing the shred unit on top.
• So little it's laughable! Put the casters in, set the metal top on the black bottom, and make sure the paper "drawer" is pushed into place. DONE!
• Really none except for putting the wheels on and putting the two parts together. VERY easy.
• Only had to put the wheels on, and they pop right in, no screws or tools required.
• Push the wheels on and place the motor on top of the basket. Nothing more.
WILL THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER TAKE STAPLES AND PAPER CLIPS?
• Hi Stephen, The instruction manuel says the unit will handle staples and small paper clips and then states "however, proper discretion is recommended". Again, this is a shredder designed for light use --- up to 8 sheets of 20-lb bond paper at a time with a max of width of 8 3/4". I've found that shredding no more than 5-or-6 sheets at a time works best.
• It takes CDs and credit cards ( in their own dedicated slots ) but I haven't tried stapled sheets yet. As for paper clips, I'd say no due to the angle of the paper slot. The clips would surely jam up the works and possibly break the feeder teeth. If you need to shred paper-clipped items, you need a really heavy duty ( expensive ) shredder.
• Sorry, but I don't know. My Basics 8-sheet shredder quit when I fed it 8 sheets and before I had the chance to try it with paper clips and staples. In my opinion, this is a deficient product and I returned it for a refund.
• Have no idea regarding paper clips, but it will take staples as long as they are the office product types and not the construction or very thick commercial types. Highly recommend this product.
• I've had no problem with staples but haven't tried paperclips - and I don't think I would put them in a shredder.
• Yes
CAN THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER SHRED STICKY PAPER?
• It can, but I've read that it's not recommended because the sticky glue gums up the cutters. I would stick the sticky paper or label onto another piece of paper planned to shred, then follow up with more paper, and then oil the shredder frequently to prevent any gumminess dulling the cutters. It can happen to any shredder, even large industrial ones.
• Hi Marilyn, sorry it took so long for me to answer. I have put the sticky paper like you would get from the pharmacy with your filled prescriptions on it (like really big stickers), through the shredder and had no problem at all. Other than that I have not had any other opportunities to put anything else sticky through it.
• I've put some labels through from time to time and it's been fine. Mostly I just shred regular paper though. I would have to imagine if you did a lot of sticky paper, over time the residue would build up on the blades.
• I've not tried sticky paper in it. I would be concerned that it might "gum" up the mechanism, but I don't know for sure.
• If you mean sticky notes or similar paper with very light sticky properties, yes. I haven't tried anything stickier than that.
• I don't know. I haven't tried it on sticky paper. But, my guess is that it will.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU USE A SHREDDER LUBRICANT SHEET ON THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER?
• I haven't run any through yet, other than the very first sheet when I set the shredder up. I plan to run a couple sheets through every few thousand sheets. To make a 'cheap' lubricant sheet, take a blank piece of paper and put at least three lines WD40 or other light oil horizontally across it and after it has soaked in, run two or three sheets through the shredder. You'll be good to go until the next time.
• About every 30 sheets or so. I found no info on that issue just have done it since I bought the first shredder about 2 yrs. ago. We simply wore the first one out. We live in a RV full-time and shred every piece of paper with our name and address on it so it's used often. Would suggest regular shredder lubricant and we run a bead across the top of the sheet.
• According to instructions on the shipping box, one can enter B008R52BRA in the Amazon search box to see troubleshooting and maintenance information for this unit. This information includes lubrication instructions.
• I read on one website that you shouldn't use a lubricant like WD-40 since it's flammable and could start a fire if the shredder is overheated.
• Whenever you like. Run wax paper through it.
• Depends on sheets put through it.
HOW MUCH SHREDDED PAPER WILL THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER HOLD?
• I use a 13 gal. kitchen bag to collect my shredded paper I can empty the shredder 4x to fill it up. So it holds about 3+ gal. This is a good shredder I am so happy with it and the price was great I know you can spend a lot more and get less shredder. The shreddings are tiny no chance of anyone putting that back together. For what it is worth I would buy it again in a heart beat. and pat myself on the back for it again. I did good
• The inside of the bin measures approximately 10"h x 11"w x 7"d, or very roughly 70-80% of a standard large paper grocery bag. I agree it could hold 100 - 200 shredded sheets, although as the bin fills you can pack down the shredded paper with your hands and greatly increase the capacity.
• Because the shreds are micro it will hold a large quantity - not sure of an exact number of sheets though. I have not had to empty it with normal usage for several weeks. Agree that it might well be 1 to 2 hundred shredded sheets.
• You can fit up to 8 (normal weight) pages into the shredder at one time. I shredded a bunch of paper, and am guessing it held at least 200 pages (shredded).
CAN THE WHEELS BE REMOVED?
• You get to install the wheels yourself, so if you don't want wheels, you don't have to have them. Once installed, they could be removed, but it would take a bit of force. You might need to pry them out with a screwdriver or equivalent lever.
• Yes, the wheels can be removed even though when you put them on, they are locked securely in place. The wheels make it much easier to move it from one place to another.
• Yes they just push in and all you need to do is pry them up from the retaining ring and then just finish pulling them out.
• Yes, in fact one of my wheels broke off and so I removed the other three. It is not necessary to move around for me.
• Yes, the wheels can be removed. It cuts the paper into small pieces about the size of a large grain of rice.
• The wheels come separate from the body. You can put them on or leave them off.
• Yes. They come unattached and you have to physically attach them if you wish.
• Yes, the wheels are added after you take the shredder out of the box.
• Yes you don't have to put them in when assembling
• Yes
CAN YOU SEE IF THE BIN IS FULL OR NOT WITHOUT PULLING THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER OUT? I..E, IS THERE A "WINDOW" ON THE PULLOUT BIN?
• Yes, that opening on the front is a small window for checking the contents. However, I line the bin with a plastic bag and can't see the level. It is very easy to slide the bin open. It is also amazing to see what this machine does to paper and credit cards. Everything is mulch....
• Yes there is a window. You can see it in the picture. Best to empty when the paper just reaches the bottom of the window, otherwise it gets too close to the blades and the heat cannot escape easily. Overheating is not a good thing!
• Yes you can see if the bin is full...there is a small window near the top of the machine, not very big but you can see when it's full.
• No there is no window to view if the bin is full but the removal of the paper is very easy.
• Yes, the front of the bin had a window and the bin itself slides right out.
• Yes, you can see if the bin is full without pulling it out.
• There is a window.
• Your welcome!
• Yes
WILL THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER JAM IF YOU DON'T GET THE PAPER ANGLED JUST RIGHT? CPR DIDN'T HELP!
• It will jam if you try to put in more than 10 sheets. It jammed on me once when I put in to many. I have put one or two in angled wrong and the shredder did ok. Lesson for the day-- follow the instructions
• It will beside inserting it angled if you insert 8 pages the machine dies it can not accept more than 2 sheets at the time its not doing what youamazon people claim tryit and you will see it .muharem
• The paper seems to get pulled sideways through a crack. So it doesn't seem to jam. I haven had it jam yet. After shredding 4 bin fulls worth. Hope this helps.
• I haven't had any problems with paper jams and I just stuff it in any way, so i suppose its not a problem.
• It has not jammed on me yet. Some pieces have been pulled in crooked and the shredder handled it well.
• I haven't experienced any jams yet but haven't shredded more than a few sheets at a time.
• Hasn't yet - and I have shredded about 100 pages so far at one time
DOES THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER OVERHEAT?
• I have run whole junk mail letters through mine and it slowed down some(thick) but chew write through it. Don't exceed the specs it should be a good one but you can always spend $200 + if you think it will be a problem. I use for personal not business. This may not be the best choice for a business unit if you run it several hours everyday?
• I have had four shredders of different brands. They all would overheat if I tried to have them shred more sheets of paper at a time than they were rated to shred.
• We have had ours for about 6 months now. We use it quite often and we have never had a problem with over heating, even when we shred CD's or credit cards
• I haven't had a problem with overheating...I shred as I need so don't run it to long at one time...It's a great shredder!
• Mine has not overheated and I use it for about 10 minutes at a time, if it overheat it is suppose to shut down.
• I haven't shredded huge masses of paper yet but in normal usage, it doesn't overheat.
• I have not had that problem and I have used it pretty regularly.
"SHREDDING" CD'S / DVD'S: HOW WELL DOES THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER DESTROY THIS MEDIA / WHAT WOULD BE A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF DISKS PER HOUR?
• While I have not shredding any CDs / DVDs, I have shredded credit cards and they are shredded just like paper. It uses the same cutting blades for everything. Thus, the CDs / DVDs will be shredded like paper. Meaning in little bits. I sincerely doubt that anyone will be able to piece the media back together even if they wanted to.
• I have only shred about 20 CDs. It did a wonderful job. I wouldn't shred too much at a time. It has an auto shutoff if it gets to hot, but i would not wait for that to happen.
• It slices the DVD into 4 pieces. It uses a separate slot and blade than the slot and blades used for shredding paper.
• I have only shredded a few CD's. I don't know how many it can destroy in and hour.
• It's awesome i would recommend this to my friends
• It's awesome i would recommend this to my friends
• It's awesome i would recommend this to my friends
• Have never shredded a cd so can't answer this.
• I've done maybe two with no problems!
IS THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER MADE IN CHINA OR USA ?
• It works, and it works real well. If China can make mid-quality smartphones, they can get a shredder right. Been over a year and I've ran plastics and credit chips through it fine. Just don't go over 8 sheets and it shouldn't jam. I even keep the staples on, powerful motor. Maybe once a year I would spray some machine oil onto paper and run it through for lubrication. That's about it for my maintenance. Quality depends on quality control these days, it's a global market. I'm sure Amazon wouldn't want to drag its name through the mud by implementing shoddy QA.
• Unfortunately, it is made in China, not the USA. We try to find US made products as much as possible, but so much of the electronic equipment is made in China, and this one has the label on the shredder to indicate that. Having said that, if you cannot find another made in the US, I have found the convenience of this shredder in being able to pull out the drawer rather than lifting a heavy top, so much more well constructed and easy to empty than previous ones I have had. It really functions well.
• It is made in China.
IS THIS GOOD TO DESTROY ALL MAIL - SPAM FROM CHASE ( FOR EXAMPLE ) WHICH I DONT WANT TO OPEN ? STRAIGHT FROM MY MAILBOX TO SHREDDER. THE SHREDDER SOMETIMES HAS A CREDITCARD EXAMPLE INSIDE.
• As mentioned above, you can certainly do that for thinner envelopes. A 12-sheet might handle thicker envelopes better. I always like to open the envelopes just to make sure there isn't a large amount of that adhesive junk they use to stick sample credit cards to the papers with. That stuff can make a mess of even the best shredder.
• Yes, that's pretty much what I use mine for. However if it's on the ticker side, I would take it apart and do it individually because it tends to jam if it's thick.
• I'd get a 12 sheet one for that. I think you'd have to open the mail and put the card in separately with this one. This one is hard to feed the stuff into also.
• I haven't used it that way. I'm not inclined to, because I think it might overload the machine. I open the junk, and then feed it through.
• Not necessary unless mail contains information that contains your personal information or applications for new credit cards.
WHAT IS MEANT BY PAPER FEED AWNING???? WHAT???? WHERE AND HOW DOES THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER TAKE THE PAPER???
• The paper feed "awning" covers the entry slot to the shredder blades. A curved groove on the back of the awning directs paper inserted under the awning to the blade entry, which is s downward slot in the shredder cover. For successful shredding, ensure that your paper is NOT curved UPWARD when placed in the slot. The guide on the back of the awning wants to direct the paper downward and the shredder will not accept sheets whose entry side is curved upward.
• That's what happens when you write a review on a phone. You feed it straight through the top. Parallel to the floor not directly down into the cover. Does that make sense?
• Enlarge the image the paper goes in where you se the black triangles. This shredder is awesome I am sure you will be pleased if you buy one.
• On the top. You slide paper in at an angle. If you look at the photo you can see a dark bar ...
• Don't know what that term means. You feed the paper in a slot on top like most shredders.
HAVEN'T SEEN ANY RECENT REVIEWS OF THIS SHREDDER. THE MIXED REVIEWS ARE CONFUSING. WOULD YOU BUY THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER AGAIN??
• Would not buy this shredder again. Worked for a few weeks under average usage then the motor burned out. Simply, not well made. Purchased a higher quality shredder that works well for us.
• I have been pleased with this shredder. I use it for personal and business items, but I have found that it functions optimally at around 6-8 sheets at a time.
• Yes I would buy the shredder again. I have not any problems with the shredder. Mind you I use it for a household and not a business.
• I've only had it for a little over 1 month, used it several times for up to 15 minutes at a time & it has worked fine.
• Yes I would buy again it is better then other shredders for the price hope this helps u out
• Yes I would. I have had 2 other shredders and this one beats both of them.
• Yes I would. I have had 2 other shredders and this one beats both of them.
• Yes I like this shredder works great
HOW LONG SHOULD YOU WAIT IF THE MOTOR SHUTS DOWN (THE LIGHT COMES ON BUT THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER JUST MAKES A SINGLE CLICKING SOUND WHEN YOU FEED PAPER IN )
• I'm afraid I cannot answer your question; this has never happened to me. Sounds like you may have a paper jam. The instructions say something about running it backwards to clear jams. On my old Aurora shredder, I could unplug it, turn the motor/shredder housing over and manually unjam it. I have not tried this with the Amazon shredder.
• That clicking usually meant too many pages. Try putting it in reverse, pull out the pages and reinsert by half. Wait time...idk, depends on how hot the machine got. Somewhere between 10 minutes and go away and try later in the day.
• That has not happened to me. I would think that if you used it for a long time, it probably overheated and should let it cool down for an hour or two. if it still doesn't work, then contact amazon and see if they can repair it.
• I haven't tested overheating feature. Maybe a also a jam. Try "REV" a couple times.
• Ten minutes, minimum.
DOES THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER CUT PAPER INTO CONFETTI-LIKE PIECES? I AM COMPARING THIS MODEL TO HSN EMBASSY CROSSCUT SHREDDER.
• It cuts paper into little pieces that are 1/2" long and 3/8" wide. the little paper bit is folded. What I like most is the trash bucket comes out the front without having to take to heavy top off, like my previous one. a small trash bag with self handles fits right into this bucket and makes it so easy to empty. the best shredder I have used - at home or in the office. I am not familiar with the HSN Embassy.
• Yes it cross cuts and makes very small pieces, do not know what the other HSN one costs, but I am very happy with this purchase for the price, and it is very quiet.
• Cuts paper into small confetti-like pieces. It's great. I passed on the crosscut when making my purchase.
• This shredder cuts the paper into grain of rice size pieces. It seems to me to offer very great security.
• Yes, it cuts into tiny pieces (not strips) just as shown on HSN.
• Yes it does! Best shredder I've ever owned.
DOES THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER COME WITH ANY SHREDDER OIL IN THE BOX? OR DO I NEED TO BUY IT SEPARATE?
• No it does not...I've used ours a lot!!! What I do..... take a sheet of newsprint, fold it to fit the slot. Spray WD40 across the center and shred away!!! I tend to shred a lot at one sitting so I 40 it before every session. RLC
• Use canola oil, put a small line of it on a normal 8 1/2 x 11 piece of paper at the top. Run it thru the machine, then run reverse for 2 or 3 seconds and you are done. Works great!!!
• No, it does not; you will need to buy it separately. What I have used, in the past, are the lubricating sheets that you can buy; you just put one in to shred, and it's done.
• No oil in box, you can just use 3 in 1 oil....no need to buy expensive shredder oil.
• Do not use the Fellowes oil -- my experience with Fellowes is that it gets gummy.
• It comes with a very small bottle of clear oil plus several plastic bags.
• No shredder oil was in the box.
DOES LINING THE BASKET WITH A PLASTIC BAG DISABLE THE FUNCTIONING OF THE SHREDDER?
• Haven't tried that but I do not think it would. The front basket facing has a 1" to 2" lip higher than the rest of the basket so to make the bag stay in place you would have the bag overlap the basket edges which may not be pleasing to the eye because part of the bag would be shown overlapping the front top edge. The front side of the shredder is also the front of the basket as one piece.
• I did not try this. Since everything that goes into it is dry, I saw no need to line the basket that catches the shreds. They would be easy to dump out into a trash can when needed.
• I just got my shredder today. I used a regular store (ex:Walmart,Kroger) plastic bag and it worked just fine. Filled up one bag and working on the second already.
• I don't know, but not sure why you would want to do that, it's unnecessary.
• I really don't know as I have not used a liner in mine.
CAN YOU SHRED THE STICK ON NAME LABLES THAT COME IN THE MAIL?
• I have shredded the stick on labels in this shredder without any problem. I put pieces of paper in front of and behind the labels to try to keep the gummy off the shredder blades. May not be necessary but makes me feel better.
• I would not. I bought this to replace one that all gummed up and burned up the motor. This one I will keep clean of gummy stuff.
• I have never tried but think they might get caught in the machine and jam it. It shreds credit cards and CD's with no problem.
• Yes but for wear and tear I would only do so if they are paper based labels not plastic or vinyl,
• I have done that. As long as the glue is covered with paper I would think.
• NO. Not recommended. Eventually they will gum up the shredder.
• I did not try to do that. Sorry I cannot help.
• Yes it can handle that
• Yes you can
DO YOU HAVE TO REMOVE STAPLES FROM PAPERS BEFORE YOU SHRED THEM?
• The shredder will shred papers that are attached with a staple. If the papers are too thick, I usually tear some of them off and shred them separately. The staples have not affected the way my shredder runs or caused any problems with the blades.
• No, it does a great job, even with staples still attached. I just wish there were a light or some type of warning when basket is getting full. I tend to forget to keep an eye on it, and it is a real mess if you overfill it.
• The instructions say no, so I do shred them usually, but sometimes I leave them in.
• Yes. It was suggested in the directions to do so. It just made sense to me.
• No you do not. It will shred small paper clips no problem.
• Don't know for sure but I do just to be safe.
• I do, just to be on the safe side.
• Yes
• No
IS THERE A STANDARD SIZE PLASTIC BAG THAT WOULD FIT INSIDE THE BIN TO MAKE EMPTYING WASTE MORE CONVENIENT?
• The shredder will not operate if a plastic bag is used. There is a safety switch on the cutter head that must be in contact with the waste basket case to operate. What I do is take a Glad Force Flex garbage bag and just empty the waste basket into that. No mess. But be sure to empty the basket often because it fills up quickly. I hope this helps you out! This is an Amazon manufactured product and is very well made. Buy shredder oil sheets to shred periodically to keep the cutter heads lubricated. Patrick Collier
• I use a plastic bag from a store - Publix, Wal-Mart, Winn-Dixie (the ones with the holes for handles). It fits in perfect, slides over the take out "basket" and I have had no problem.
• I don't know. I use a plastic shopping bag from the supermarket. I make sure that the bin isn't completely full fit the bag over the bin and turn it upside down.
DOES THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER ONLY DO ONE TYPE OF MICRO-CUT? OR CAN ALSO DO STRIP CUT AND CROSS CUT?
• It shreds the paper into little pieces like mulch.... no, it does not have settings for crosscut or strip. It makes such little pieces that I'm sure the documents, credit cards or CD's could ever be put back together again...
• Only one type of cut. Looks like a tiny <> shape. Strip cuts can be put back together again without that much trouble.
• It ONLY does micro cut! Never heard of a shredder that can do multiple "cuts". Maybe more expensive shredders can.
• Only micro cut for sheets of paper. Only strip cut for CD's / Credit Cards. There are two separate slots.
• As far as I know, it only does one and the particles are small. I compost them later.
• It only does micro shredding. There is no feature to make it do strip or cross cut.
• Just one type that I know of. Hope this helps!
• Just micro-cut.
SHOULD I OIL THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER?
• I am confused about this question also. I just received shipment and thoroughly read the small manual. I find NOTHING indicated about oiling, except on the page 1 warnings. It states "DO NOT use flammable synthetic oil, petroleum-based or aerosol products of any kind on shredder." I can only interpret this to mean no oiling necessary.
• I recommend that you use the shredder lubricant sheets that they now make to keep the shredder lubricated. I used oil on the last one and it seems that you can get to much in the motor and it gets gummy and doesn't work well.
• I haven't had to oil mine and I bought it over a year ago. The manual does mention to dribble a bit of oil on the paper as it shreds. I wouldn't add much oil.
• I use the oil sheets periodically that you just feed through. I do huge batch shredding and it has worked great.
• No need. Been using mine for months and never had to do anything
HAVE YOU OWNED / USED THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER FOR MORE THAN ONE YEAR, AND IS THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER STILL FUNCTIONING PROPERLY?
• I purchased the shredder 9 months ago and run it hard and a lot throughout the year. I have not had any problems except when I run it for too long of a time and do not let the motor cool down. I have been very impressed with this shredder and extremely pleased with how it has held up to all my shredding.
• Not a yearyet - however it functions well and I especially love the drawer - makes it so much easier to empty without getting little bits of paper all over the floor.........
• Yes , have it a long time and still works. Cannot shred a lot at once. After about 5 mins it over heats and stops working until it cools down again.
• No, I haven't owned it for more than a year. It has functioned perfectly since I purchased it.
• Works for me now, can't say in time to come I've only had it around 5 months.
DOES THE TOP HAVE TO COME OFF IN ORDER TO PULL THE BASKET OUT?
• No. This shredder has a pull out drawer that is actually the shred basket that slides out when you pull what looks like the housing for the basket out of the shredder. The shred basket is molded into the front of the shredder and is small. That is why the instructions say to empty the basket frequently. I wish the basket were larger. But for the price, this shredder is a very sturdy and well-made unit. I have used it for several months now and have had only one paper jam. I switched the cutting head to reverse and was able to clear the jam easily. I hope all of this extra information helps you make the right purchasing decision for you!
• No it does not. That was one of the reasons I chose this one.
• Nope, the basket slides out of the front of the unit.
• No, the basket pulls out from the front very easy.
• No
IS THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER A TOP LOADING SHREDDER? I JUST PURCHASED ONE THAT YOU HAVE TO INSERT MORE HORIZONTALLY - I'M RETURNING THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER TO PURCHASE A TOP LOADING SHREDDER.
• The shredder is on the "top," but paper feed is at a 90 degree angle (horizontal). For what it's worth, I really like this shredder and have been generally satisfied with ALL Amazon Basics products I've purchased. If you need an at home shredder that will see light to moderate duty, I wouldn't hesitate to use this one. Hope that helps!
• Yup. I highly recommend this shredder, as my dental office has been running off of it for the last 10 months. It shreds smaller and more completely than the fancy "micro security" shredders at Officemax across the street.
• Top loading YES. AL All sheets are loaded horizontal. Credit cards, dvd and cd discs.
• The feeder is on the top as you can see. But you do have to insert at a horizontal angle.
• This is a top loader
• Yes
GOOD FOR NORMAL HOME USE?
• Yes its definitely good for normal home use just dont shred more than 7 pages at the time. Over all its a good shredder for the price.
• I bought it for my brother after robbing him of his diamond cut shredder and he likes it. And yes, it was for home use.
• Yes. This is a great cross-shredder for home use. I bought it to shred files, and it's done a wonderful job!
• Absolutely. Just don't put too many sheets through at once, and keep the bin cleaned out.
• I haven't had any problems with it. Though I don't shred a whole lot.
• Definitely, very good for home,.best one we have used so far
• I am happy with it, love the rollers and easy emptying.
• So far...works well.....the wheels are a nuisance.
• It runs smooth and quiet, it gets the job done.
• It has been perfect for normal home use.
JUST RECEIVED THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER AND WHEN SWITCHED TO AUTO THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER WILL NOT TURN OFF... KEEPS RUNNING. SHREDS FINE AND NOTHING JAMMED, WON'T TURN OFF.
• I don't put anything that has had the gummy tape that holds credit cards, etc. to the paper through the shredder because it can effect the function of the sensor. Or the problem may be a malfunction switch. I have had no problems with mine, so, can only suggest what may be the problem. Good luck. Another suggestion: you may be overloading your basket.
• It operates when the paper blocks the photosensor in the input guide, you can just barely see it directly below and center of the credit card slot, black dot surrounded by white plastic, about 1/4 across. Something could be stuck in there and keeping it activated or unfortunately the sensor could be bad. That's about your only two choices.
• So glad your problem was solved. Amazon is so good to respond in the affirmative to problems. You did exactly what I would have done.
DOES THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER SHUT DOWN?
• Well it has one switch with three positions: feed in, reverse (in case of a jam), and neutral. Neutral is kind of a standby mode. It won't feed in paper to shred even if you shove it in when it's in neutral, so this is good in case you have pets with floppy ears that might get caught in it, etc. but to truly shut it off, just unplug it. No issues with that for me.
• There is an off switch, or if you have it set to automatically feed, it will stop as soon as the paper has run completely through the shredder.
• It shuts down automatically a couple of seconds after the last sheet clears when the switch is set to feed in.
• It should shut down automatically a couple of seconds after last sheet is through.
• Yes, it shuts down automatically when you stop feeding it.
• Yes it can overheat if you shred 10 to 15 sheets
IS THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER EASY TO EMPTY?
• Yes, it is very easy! the top, which is the device that does all the shredding is very heavy but amazon made the tray a cabinet-like so all you have to do is pull the tray towards you and empty it, while the top will be held by the rest of the tray.
• Yes it is easy. You just slide the front out, you don't have to take the top off and dump shreddings into trash and slide it back in. I am happy with the shredder.
• The easiest. Do not have to lift that heavy lid. Just slide the bin out. A nice window tells you when it needs emptying.
• Yes, just pull out the drawer which completely separates from the "machine" for easy emptying
• Very Easy, it just pulls out from the front (where you see the shred level).
• Yes, you can open and close very easily
HI, WAS WONDERING WHICH WAY DO YOU FEED THE PAPER? STRAIGHT DOWN FROM TOP OR SIDE-WAYS FROM TOP? OR ?
• You can not feed from top there is a lip on the blades and you have to position the paper to catch the blades. It also depends on what I am shredding. Full paper I put in starting with the top of paper, envelops I use the side since they may be wider then the opening. I really do like this shredder. I only use it for home use to protect from identity thief. Hopes this helps.
• At a slight angle from the top - the way the opening is situated does a good job of naturally guiding the way the paper needs to be fed.
• Sideways from the top. It also has slots at the top through which you can feed credit cards or CDs straight down from the top.
• Straight down from top
• Anyway you like
LOOKING FOR OVERALL OPINIONS ON THIS SHREDDER. DOES THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER LIVE UP TO EXPECTATIONS?
• This has been the best shredder i have ever owned, and I have owned a few. I have never had it jam. It shreds paper, credit cards, DVd's and Etc. It shreds them into graffitie. a very good over all shredder, I highly recommend this shredder.
• Great shredder. If it starts to bog down, just use oil which can be purchased from Amazon. Fortunately, this shredder has not bogged down as our other one (another brand) did until we tried oil. My husband likes this one better than our old one.
• I think it is a good shredder. It bogs down pretty much if 8 pages are inserted but operates well otherwise. Credit card and cds are destroyed as well. I am satisfied with it.
• Great shredder...micro cutter...can getter cheaper ones, but not with this fine of shreeding. Yes recommend it.
• Yes
IF LED BLUE LIGHT ON.. POWER CONNECTED. BUT SHREDDED DOESN'T TAKE IN ANY PAPER / DVD.. ANY SOLUTIONS TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM? PLEASE ADVISE! THANKS!
• I am having the exact same issue all of a sudden... I checked to make sure the top is secure and that the bin is in properly, but nothing happens. It works in "rev" (though there isn't a jam), but nothing happens at all when in auto. Did you find a solution? I've only used this a handful of times since purchasing, and those times were fine.
• You have to push the button down for automatic. Then shred. Push the button up and it reverses to push out in case of a jam. If it still doesn't shred, make sure that the top is securely placed on the bottom portion. Hope that helps.
• Perhaps the bin is not completely pushed in or the switch which senses the bin is somehow stuck open.
CAN YOU PUT A SMALL GARBAGE LINER INSIDE THE BASKET?
• Yes you can place a trash bag over the bin. I have used a plastic grocery bag before, but it makes it harder because you can not see how full the bin is since you are blocking the window.
• You could but I would advise against that due to static cling, it's just as easy to empty into trash bag without placing bag in the recepticle.
• Yes you can. I have a small plastic grocery bag lining the inside of mine. Makes it much easier to empty.
• Yes. I use Wal Mart bags and they work great. This makes it much easier and cleaner to empty.
• I think you can. I don't use one because it so easy to empty.
• Yes.i use plastic bags from grocery stores.works fine.
• I did not try, but i dont see why not!
WILL THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER HANDLE JUNKMAIL ENVELOPES WELL?
• To answer your question: This shredder does a good job on shredding paper up to eight pages thick, including junk mail. For me the bonus is it chews up (expired) credit cards and CDs/DVDs. Recommended highly for home shredding (!) type use. Oh, shredded material is easy to dispose of. No fuss or mess.
• I haven't had any issues with them. If the junk mail is thick, I usually open it and feed a little at a time so that the shredder doesn't work too hard.
• Yes, shreds junkmail no problem as long as envelope is not too thick. If really stuffed, you'll want to open it & do a few sheets at a time.
• Yes, it is great for junk mail as long as it is not too thick.
• This shredder eats everything I feed it.
• Only thin ones
• Yes!
CAN THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER UNIT SHRED JUNK MAIL? I.E. CREDITCARD OFFERS AND SIMILAR?
• Yep, shreds credit cards and cds, as well as any junk mail envelope, really. You don't really want to put the whole contents of the junk mail in it, though. It'll still shred if you do, but it'll kind of churn and heat up the machine faster after too many rounds of 'em.
• I have not used it yet, but there is a special opening for credit card shredding. I am confident that it could handle any junk mail that included thicker shredding requirements. However, my junk mail is usually just paper so I don't use this feature often.
• I get the usual junk mail as everyone does. I put the envelopes in the slot used to shred credit cards so I don't even have to open them. It does a good job.
• Yes
WE WOULD KEEP THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER UNPLUGGED, IF ONE OF OUR LITTLE NIPPERS GOT THEIER HANDS IN THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER, DOES THE SHREDDER HAVE A SMALL ENOUGH OPENING NOT TO ALLOW LITTLE FINGERS IN IT?
• Tiny fingers can probably get in. there is also a bit of a plastic edge just inside. i doubt they could get in far enough to trip the machine online. the teeth are even further in. i actually keep mine off the floor so I don't have to bend over for it. grandkids are do not come in my office either.
• I'm thinking they're fingers would have to be very small. The shredder is small enough you could set it up out of reach if need be. It is heavy though.
• It is designed so that the shredder feed is covered so I think it is very safe around small children.
• The design is very child safe
HOW SMALL DOES THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER SHRED CERITCARDS?
• Since the credit cards go through a small slot that engages with the main shredder, it looks like they are shredded the same size as paper - 3/8" x 1/8". Nice and small. CDs go in a different slot, and I'm not sure how small they are shredded, but any shredding will render them useless. This has been a good purchase. Easy to use and empty and quieter than my last one.
• The credit cards get shredded as small as the paper (confetti size) as long as you run them through the credit card slot. You can consider your credit card a 2000 piece puzzle once this machine is done with it. :)
• The same size as paper, very small. It's perfect!
• Tiny, tiny squares, just like the paper!
• Shred cd's
WILL I NEED TO OIL THE CUTTERS?
• I would suggest that you do and that would go for all shredders. This is the best shredder I have owned I regret my older one did not break sooner. Oil a sheet every few hundred sheets and I am sure this will last much longer than if you don't oil it.
• It's smaller for home use but we have no problem with it. I've never oiled the cutters on any shredder I've owned so don't know how to answer that question.
• I do not know as of yet. It didn't need it out of the box. But as time goes on and papers are shredded, it may need it down the line.
• It doesn't say anything in the manual about needing to oil the cutters. And I haven't needed to.
DID ANYONE ELSES COME WITH PAPER IN THE BLADES (POSSIBLY FROM TESTING) OR DID I RECEIVE A USED UNTHE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER ?
• It says right in the owner's manual that there may be some paper shreds in the unit because the manufacturer tests the unit before it leaves the factory to make sure it works properly.
• It mentions somewhere in the info on the product that paper may be in the blades when it arrives because they test them before shipping.
• I don't know about the others, but mine did not come with paper in the blades. By the way, I am absolutely delighted with the shredder.
• My shredder did not have any paper in its blades. Its still working well and is over 1 year in use.
• Mine came clean. Don't know about the paper in the blades.
WHAT DOES THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER MEAN IF INSTEAD OF SHREDDING PAPER THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER MAKES A HIGH PITCHED "WHINE" IN BOTH THE "ON" AND "REVERSE" MODES? IS THERE A WAY TO FIX THIS?
• It shreds paper all right but the machine is just loud as the shredding takes place. It doesn't last long. I would be afraid to open it up and start messing around but if you are into fixing things, you might be able to decrease the noise. It doesn't bother me that much and I wear hearing aids that magnify such sounds so that may be part of the problem.
• I have no idea and would love to know the answer myself. All I know is it is no longer shredding anything. It has become an expensive trash can. I would not buy again.
IS ANYONE KNOW HOW QUIET THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER IS?
• I have had several shredders and this particular one isn't bad where noise is concerned. They all make noise. That's just a given. This shredder can only be run for about fifteen minutes before it heats up and needs to have a rest. It will reset itself but one can't just keep feeding it paper forever without a chance for it to cool down.
• This one is a little more quiet than my last one but will still wake the baby in the next room !
• They all make quite a bit of noise, but in my experience I would put this one at medium loud.
• It's definitely not quiet but I don't know what to relate it to.
• I`am quite satisfied with the sound.
ONE QUICK QUESTION: IS THE PULL OUT DRAWER EASY TO PULL OUT TO EMPTY AND EASY TO PUT BACK IN PLACE?
• For a paper shredder, it pulls out very easily. It also stays put while in use. I'm easily able to remove and replace the bin with one hand. It doesn't have a special slide mechanism, like a good kitchen cabinet drawer, so don't expect it to "glide."
• Yes Sarah it is easy to pull out every thing about this is easy I had it for a long time already and it is flawless
• Yes, very easy to pull out. The drawer just sits in the space below the shredder.
• I've never had a problem! This shredder is perfect.
• What do I get for answering the question?
• Yes
CAN YOU LINE THE BASKET WITH A PLASTIC BAG?
• In addition to the other answers, another problem is that a plastic bag would obscure the "full" window view. You would have to pull the tub out to see if it is full. Would sort of defeat the purpose.
• I have tried with a plastic bag from a big box store. For me, it didn't work out so well. The basket is deep, and it does hold quiet a bit of paper crumbs. I empty about once a week for our mail and other stuff.
• I don't think so - the basket turns the machine on when it is closed. It fits pretty tight.
• Thanks very much. I feared as much.
• Yes,That's how I use it,
IS THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER A CROSS SHREDDER?
• Yes it is but not like the older cross cuts that make strips large enough to paste together. This one makes what looks like confetti.
• No, it is a micro-cut shredder which is much better than a cross-cut shredder; it cuts into very tinny pieces!
• This one makes small pieces of confetti that render the puzzle pieces virtually impossible to reassemble!
• Yes, it is. Papers and credit cards come out in tiny pieces.
• Yes. Tiny little bits come out. This thing is awesome.
• Micro-cut. That's what it says in the description
• Yes...cuts pages up into tiny little pieces...
• Yes, crinkled little pieces, not strips.
• Yes it is. It makes confetti squares.
• Yes
IS THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER A CROSS CUT SHREDDER?
• Its better then a cross cut shredder this is a Micro cut shredder. More secure shred then any cross cut or basic cut shredders. Micro cut shredder will cut the paper into tiny confetti pieces. Where as the cross cut will still cut paper in strips. How ever the credit card and CD/ DVD shredder on this unit only shreds in straight cut shreds (basic shredding).
• No, it shreds paper into confetti-size piece, which makes it impossible to piece together. Safer than a cross shredder.
• No, this is a micro-cut shredder. It makes confetti out of what you run through it. This is must safer than cross-cut
• Yes, this is a cross cut shredder. You will get little chips of paper, not strips.
WILL THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER MICROSHRED CARDBOARD LIKE THE TYPE OF BOXES FROM AMAZON PRIME. IM LOOKING FOR A MICROSHREDDER THAT WILL SHRED CARDBOARD FOR MY COMPOSTER. THANKS FOR ANSWERING THIS QUESTION?
• I have never tried to shred cardboard through it. To be honest, I never will and would advise NOT doing it! The motor itself has a hard time getting through 4 sheets of paper; Running cardboard through it will certainly add a.....not so refreshing aroma to your home (read - smoke filled).
• While it probably isn't a good idea - it will shred through cardboard box (I just tried with a piece of the box it came in). Not sure it would hold up to doing that on a regular basis though.
• No it won't , it's thicker than 8 sheets of paper.
I AM HAVING A PROBLEM SHREDDING CREDITCARDS. CAN ANYONE TELL ME HOW THEY GOT THEIR CREDITCARDS TO SHRED. THANK YOU.
• The cards need to be inserted vertically in the middle of the slot. It does slow down to do it which concerned me the first time but it works just fine. We shred bank cards and gift cards w/o any problem.
• I haven't had problems at all with the credit card shredding. I use the smaller insert on top of the shredder.
• Just place the cardsideways in the center of where you place the paper just the one card nomore and no papers
• I just pushed mine in the feeder and it worked just fine. Not sure why yours is not working?
WILL THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER SHRED PAPER CLIPS OR STAPLES? COMPARED TO THE ONE AT STAPLES FOR $200 "STAPLES 12-SHEET MICRO-CUT SHREDDER" OR THE "ATIVA® MDM8000 8-SHEET
• Staples are no problem at all. Paper Clips I would never try, they are steel and will get caught in the cutting blades. Just remove the paper clips and recycle them.
• I haven't tried the staples and paper clips. I'm ok with staples going through the shredder, but not paper clips.
• It will handle staples and vey small clips but I can't honestly say it will crunch up large paper clips.
• It goes through staples no problem. Haven't tried paper clips yet.
• I try not to put staples thru and certainly not paper clips.
HOW MANY MINUTES CAN THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER RUN CONTINUOUSLY WITHOUT OVERHEATING?
• I haven't had overheat. I wasn't running constant there were a few seconds in between papers and I did enough to fill up the can without it stopping.
• At least four minutes based upon personal use... The motor housing gets warm to the touch... but still functions perfectly well..
• The longest I have run the shredder is 5 minutes straight, it did not heat up and kept running fine and it's pretty quiet too.
• I have not used it continuously yet. I don't know the answer. But it is a very good shredder.
• I have not used it continuously yet. I don't know the answer. But it is a very good shredder.
CAN YOU USE A PLASTIC BAG AROUND THE RIM OF THE BIN TO CATCH THE SHREDDED PAPER?
• I tried it and with a plastic bag wrapped over the top edges of the collection bin the device won't turn on. In fact, I couldn't even get the bin fully into the opening which probably prevented the connection that would allow the device to turn on.
• No. The bin that holds the shredded paper slides out from the base, and needs to click back into place. A bag would probably prevent you from sliding the paper-catch back in properly. Note: this is not a waste bin topper style shredder.
• I tried with poor results - would not recommend using a bag inside of it.
IS THERE A SLOT IN FRONT TO PUT SAY, ENVELOPES ETC YOU DON'T NEED TO SHRED?
• No. The waste basket part that catches the shreddings has a pull out. It is pretty easy to pull it out a bit, put something in and then close it. How easy that is depends on how full the basket is.
• There is no slot for not shredding anything. There are slots for CDs and credit cards.
• No, that is the Window which allows you to see when the basket is full.
• No slot but the basket pulls out easily for envelopes and such.
• No ma'am. No slot on this machine other than the shredder slot.
• No there isn't.
THE AUTO FEATURE IS NOT WORKING. WHEN PAPER IS SHREDED THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER DOES NOT SHUT OFF AUTOMATICALLY. HOW CAN I FIX THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER?
• Either something is stuck in the center where you feed the paper and the auto switch thinks paper still needs to be shredded. Or it is possible the switch is broken. There is also another switch in the center of the CD/DVD slot; so check that as well. I would put an index card through the center of each slot. If that doesn't clear it up, then one of the switches is probably bad.
• Make sure there is nothing stuck where you feed the paper, the machine may think there is paper still to shred. Make sure to unplug the machine first!
THE OWNERS MANUAL STATES THAT THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER IS 230V. IS THIS REALLY 230V????
• My owners manual says 115v, 5.5 amp in the specification section on page 4 -- what I can say about this is that it works very well - have only used it one time but blew through a giant stack of misc...
• Hmmm...this may be a misprint? I have never heard of 230v...there is a 220v...This shredder works in a normal U.S. outlet (120V.)
• Mine runs off 110/120v using a standard electrical plug. The data plate states it runs on 115V.
• I have it plugged into a regular 120V US outlet and it works just fine.
• Mine says 115 volt AC, 5.5 amp
• Yes
IS THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER DUAL VOLTAGE?
• No, almost everything with a motor is going to be single voltage (such as a hair dryer or electric shaver). There should be a 110v and a 230v version available on Amazon - but it doesn't look like they make it very obvious which is which. I suspect if you are on amazon.com (US) you will get 110v, and if you are on amazon.co.uk (UK) you will get 230v. Probably best to check the specs to be sure though.
• Not sure what you mean but it plugs in to a regular outlet
• I have no idea, I am blond and senior!!!!
• No it is not
• No.
WHAT TYPE OF OIL SHOULD BE USED?
• I use Shredder Lubricant Sheets, they are fairely cheap and last for a long time depending on how many you buy. Here is a great one to get Aleratec Shredder Lubricant Sheets - White (240165)
• For several years I have used a generic brand of Paper Sherader Oil that can be found in most office supply stores. Be sure to use the oil sparingly.
• Shredder oil. Do not use a petroleum base oil like 38n1.
• Used WD-40. Worked Fine.
• I used WD-40.
• WD40
CAN THE FEEDER GUARD BE REMOVED FOR CLEANING?
• It does not appear to be removable. The silver top cutter/motor assembly is attached to the base . I suppose that one could remove the waste basket, turn the whole unit over and clean the underside but I have not needed to do that.
• Yesterday I checked and tried to open feeder guard. I was not able to open it. The shredding blades came assembled to feeder guard so I guess it can't be removed.
• Yes, you can take the entire top section (in photo, light gray portion, with the blades)comes off and clean it or get clogged paper out of the shredding teeth.
HOW MUCH DOES THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER WEIGH?
• I don't know the actual weight. It is "top" heavy and must be about 5 to 10 lbs. The casters make it easy to move around, and I keep lined with a garbage bag so that it is easy clean out. I just open the drawer and pull out the full bag and put in an empty bag.
• 25 +/- pounds - it is not that heavy to lift and the basket flips out quite easily. It is sturdy and you have the option of putting it on casters to roll it.
• Less than 30 lbs; casters make it easy to move.
• It is about 19 pounds
WHAT'S THE RUN TIME FOR THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER?
• I suppose it depends on how much paper your putting in at a time. I was putting 1 to 3 pages at a time with a few seconds in between and it didn't over heat. I was a able to fill the can almost all the way up. It didn't shut off once.
• You have to be careful not to overdue as it gets hot. I have to pace my shredding. Two minutes seems to ok, It works well and does a good job shredding. Do not overdue and its a great shredder.
• For shredding an 8.5 x 11 piece of paper, approx. 7 seconds from start to stop.
CUT SIZE?
• Cut size is good, I like the unit except I was used to a more heavy duty shredder, so this one seems kind of wimpy, but it gets the job done, and I especially like the pull out drawer, so easy to empty.
• I put 8x11 sheets in the shredder and of not lined up it gets caught in the side and need to manually remove it
• It cuts paper etc into the smallest pieces of confetti ever. Its great.
• Also I could use it to pack with the cut is so micro
• Micro mini. cuts like confetii.
• Cross cut and pretty tiny.
WHAT SIZE BAGS FIT THE WASTE BIN SOLD HERE?
• I don't use a bag, everything is cross-cut and then I empty it in the kitchen garbage can. If you still want to place a waste bag, a grocery store bag will fit good.
• Unfortunately, bags won't work in this unit. Wish they did. I just remove the bin and slip a grocery bag over the top and tip up to empty. Keeps from making a mess.
• I don;t use bags and I recommend you do the same, as well as read tbe instructions that came with it.
• A small grocery store plastic bag would fit.
HOW OFTEN DOES THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER NEED TO BE LUBRICATED?
• I cannot answer your question with any confidence as we just filled up our first waste basket. We've only had it for 3 months. I anticipate after 2 full waste baskets I'll lubricate it. Might seem excessive (or not) but I've learned from previous shredders to keep it running smoothly. I know this isn't much help.
• Depends on the usage. I use it about 3 times a day. I have also emptied it more than ten times I haven't added any oil yet. I was planning on monthly or if it gets louder.
• I haven't used it enough to answer that....sorry
WHAT IS THE "LEVEL" OF SECURTHE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER Y? 3? 4? I CANNOT FIND THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER IN THE DESCRIPTION.
• I do not know what the numerical level is but this shredder produces smaller pieces than other shredders in its price range. The only other shredders that I have seen that make smaller pieces were the ones I used in the Navy to shred classified documents.
• Was not aware you need security for a shredder, if you can put the little shreds back together you have to much time on your hands and if you are worried about someone else doing that, get a burner barrel or a service to dispose of your waste
SIZE?
• It is 7.8x12.5x16.8, which is fairly compact for a shredder. It works great so far. Under the description of the shredder, if you click on additional product details, you can get this info. as well as more data on the product. Hope this info helps. Oh, the wheels are a good addition, and it is very easy to discard the shredded paper.
• Approximately 16 1/2 inches tall -- twelve inches wide -- eight inches deep
• 161/2" tall, 12"wide and 8" deep.
• I don't know what you are referring to by size.
• About a foot and a half tall. quiet
JAMS?
• I haven't experienced any jams. It got a little heated from the backlog I created while shopping for a shredder and shut off. Once it cooled down it picked up where it left off. Still pleased with this purchase.
• I haven't put through more than 4 sheets at one time, but it hasn't jammed at all. Handled it easily.
• Haven't had any jams yet but I don't put more than about a 5 paper stack through at a time.
• So far it has not jammed, but I tend to keep it at around 6 sheets.
• Haven't experienced any jams...
SHREDS CLIPS AND STAPLES?
• I haven't tried. I have only put it into heat overload once and I'm shredding decades of records for 3 families. Extremely happy with its performance so far.
• If you mean paper clips, the answer is no, but staples yes, although only normal variety. I have not tried "heavy duty" staples.
• No, I never Shred clips or staples, I always make sure to take those, before Shred paper...
• It shreds staples, however, I never tried to shred a paper clip.
• Small staples=yes. Clips= no. they're easy to take off
DOES THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER HAVE A MANUAL REVERSE FOR JAMS?
• The shredder does have a button for reverse. So, the options for the button are automatic (forward), off, and reverse, depending on where you slide the toggle. It does not have a manual crank to force paper out though.
• The unit has three power positions; Reverse, off and auto (feed)
• Yes, it does have a switch for reverse which should clear jams.
• Yes this does have a reverse to clean the cutters
• Yes, there is a reverse button.
• Yes it does
EXCUSE ME. THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER IS FREEVOLT? I WANT A PAPER SHREDDER WITH 220V 60HZ. THANKS
• This one is 115 volt ac, 5.5 amp. It should work with a converter if it can handle the amps. The customer service number is 866-216-1072 there might be a 220 version.
• No 220V. It's set up to run on 110V 60hz. The good news is does NOT require an adaptor down to 12v or some such stepped down voltage.
• No It can not be used with 220V 60Hz. ONLY 115VAC 60HZ
• I believe it is only 110v.....
• No. It is 110.
AFTER SHREDDING MY 5TH STACK OF PAPER. A VERY FOUL SMELL AND SMOKE CAME OUT OF THE PRODUCT.. NOT WORKING AND HAVE WAITED 1 HOUR.. ANY OPTIONS?
• I used to work at staples, and I know that motor burn-out is probably the biggest killer of shredders. Sounds like that's what you have here.
• Sounds like you either jammed it or overheated it and it burned out, it usually stops when hot, I never use it more than 15 min continuously
• No foul smell and smoke doesn't out. We dont have wait 1hour. It work perfect .
IS THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER DUAL VOLTAGE? I LIVE IN A COUNTRY THAT USES 230 V (RATHER THAN THE US 120 V).
• I am sorry to say that it is not dual voltage. Input is 115 volt AC, 5.5 amp. Perhaps a converter would be the appropriate answer.
• US 120 V ... I do not recommend this shreder I returned it , already ...
• No -US 120 - you might need to ask amazon if they make it in 230
• The label on the back of the shredder shows 115 volt only.
• Mine says 110 VAC. Look at specs in Amazon listing.
HOW MANY FEET PER MINUTE IS THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER RATED FOR? I.E. HOW FAST OR SLOW IS THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER?
• As per instructions-- 8 sheet capacity max 2 minutes 2min on/ 40min off Run time-2min / 40 min off Shred Width--11/64 inches x15/64 inches x15/32 inches (4.5mmx12mm) Shredding capicity 8 sheets
• This a household shredder not for industrial use. It relatively fast for a home shedder, you can shred half a grocery bag full in 30 mins easy before it has to cool down.
• It will easily handle 8 sheets very quickly in a matter of seconds
CAN STAPLES OR PAPERCLIPS EASILY PASS THROUGH THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER?
• Sorry for the delay Jeff, according to the info that came with the shredder the answer is to both. As I am in Australia I have yet to purchase a step down transformer but will do in the short term. Good luck Joan
• Most definetly staples. I've recently shredded 8 stapled sheets without issue. I would not recommend shredding with paperclips attached.
• It was never a problem for me with staples, I never put paper clips through so can't say.
STAPLES?
• Manufacturers description says it can handle staples. I haven't personally tried it, but with the way this cuts I would have no doubt it will handle the task without jamming the machine.
• I have not tried that yet. I took any that were on the paper off before putting it through.
• No problem with staples so far, works great!
• Staples have posed no problem so far.
• I have not used with staples so far.
• It handles staples just fine forme.
WILL THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER EASILY ACCEPT SMALL PIECES OF PAPER LIKE CREDITCARD RECEIPTS?
• Yes. That's basically what I use it for, shredding receipts 1 or a handful at a time, magazine address labels, junk mail, etc.
• Definitely! It will shred up to 8 pieces of paper, credit cards, and CDs.
• Yes. You can feed those through the credit card specific slot.
• Yes it willGod bless bill
• It handles receipts without a problem.
• Yes so far it is great
• Yes.
CAN I PUT BAG TO CATCH PAPER?
• I don't think so. The container provided is ample. It holds a lot before you have to empty it. The unit works great as well. I am very pleased with it.
• I'm guessing you could use a small bag but I don't use one because it's very easy to empty.
• I just got the shredder today. I used a (Walmart, Kroger)size bag and it worked fine.
• Probably could...I haven't.
• Yes
HEIGHT AND WIDTH?
• From the top it is 12 1/4 inches wide. From front to back it is 7 5/8 inches. From top to bottom without the wheels it is 15 1/4 inches. From top to bottom with the wheels its 16 and 1/2 inches. Hope that helps.
• Thank you people..I am liking this shredder...I know this is a small thing..but, was attracted first to the wheels..
• 17" high by 12.25" wide and 7.5" deep.
• Height is 16" and width is 7.5".
DOES THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER USE 115 VAC INPUT POWER? THE USER MANUAL SAYS 230 VAC, 2 AMP.
• Yes, it is 115V AC. It says very clearly on the back sticker that it is 115VAC and power plug is standard US 110V, so no other rating specs mentioned elsewhere. I believe, it might be different unit for 220V power if manual says so.
• I plugged it into a standard US 115v outlet and it is working great.
• 115VAC 5.5amp 60hz
• Yes it does..
DOES THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER HAVE A MANUAL REVERSE BUTTON?
• Yes it does. It's very assessible as it is located on the top left of the shredder. Push the button back and you are reversing. Push the button forward and you are in shredder intake mode. Be well.
• Yes, and it does chop up paper very small.
• Yes, manual reverse, off, and forward
• There is a button option for reverse
• Yes it does! 😃
• Yea
HOW TO LUBRICATE?
• The instruction manual says nothing about lubricating. One of the warnings is: "Do Not use flammable synthetic oil." So it may not be necessary. Maybe the manufacturer would like to comment?
• Easy. Drip shreddder oil (3 in 1 brand oil works just fine). on a sheet of paper and send it through the machine. That's it.
• The other review (from the Dr. office ) mentioned it. I have not had a need to yet.
WHAT DOES MICROCUT MEAN?
• Microcut means the paper is cut into tiny, confetti-like pieces. They can't be "pieced together" as supposedly paper strips can be. Most shredders cut the paper into strips.
• The cut is smaller than a standard shredder. The cut is about 2/16th by 5/16th inch small...close in size to a hold punch.
• It cuts the paper into tiny pieces. Much smaller than strip cut and even smaller than confetti cut.
WHAT IS MICRO CUT?
• Instead of small, thin strips of paper (cross cut), micro cut makes very small star - shaped cuts. They are no larger than 1/8th of an inch in diameter resulting in a much higher level of security. This is a terrific shredder for personal use.
• What it says...the shredded pieces are unidentifiable. Good machine, you won't be disappointed.
• Tiny pieces. Cross cut. No way anyone could ever put it back together.
HOW NOISY IS THE AMAZONBASICS PAPER SHREDDER?
• Not any noiser than most others. This was the third shredder my husband & I have had over the past 15 years. It lasted us only 7 months!
• We have found it to be quite quiet especially when you consider the amount of cutting/grinding to has to do to make those tiny pieces.
• Not too bad. It's certainly not real quiet but it's not obnoxiously loud either.
